Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
