Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
