A police sergeant who jumped to the assistance of a partner who was ambushed by a knifeman was granted the King's Commendation for Valor.
Sgt Tim Ansell grappled with twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Brown following he held a knife to the throat of his partner Sergeant Marc Foster.
Brown began the violence as the law enforcement personnel and their colleague, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist subsequent to a traffic accident in Whalley Range in summer 2023.
Brown stabbed and slashed the two Sergeant Ansell and Sgt Foster before PC Wolstencroft stopped him with a electric weapon.
"Policeman knifed," the officer could be heard saying over his communication device.
Officer-mounted and dashboard camera recording shared by the agency revealed Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a hood up, rush to Sergeant Foster from the rear with a blade pointed forward.
He struck the policeman who lost balance and went down to the ground, after which Sergeant Ansell stepped in and struggled to restrain him to the pavement even though being multiple times hit with the weapon.
Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and awaited a open target, bringing the struggle to an conclusion.
Sgt Ansell can be heard to say: "Can I get something on my neck here, I've been stabbed in the neck."
Sgt Ansell sustained two open wounds to his throat and further cuts to his arms and body, whereas Sgt Foster experienced cut injuries.
Authorities stated Sergeant Foster utilized his palms to stop his fellow officer's bleeding prior to medical personnel reached the scene.
The new honor follows subsequent to the three officers were granted internal Valor Recognitions in late 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the local Police Federation in April 2024.
They further earned a Regional Courage Honor in mid-2024.
"The efforts of each policeman ultimately protected each other and ensured no members of the public endured any harm."
Brown received a sentence to an indefinite hospital order in spring 2024, per authorities.
