Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
